I am writing to express my deep disgust regarding Israel’s recent attacks on Lebanon, which have killed more than 21 people, including 2 children and 4 healthcare workers. Israel detonated thousands of personal devices, such as pagers and walkie-talkies, to carry out unprecedented acts of terror in densely populated civilian areas, including schools, supermarkets, and medical facilities.
More than 2,750 have been injured, with over 400 people requiring surgery, particularly for eye and facial damage.
One of the most horrifying aspects of this attack is that the devices detonated without warning, and the majority of the victims were civilians going about their daily lives. Medical professionals in Dahiyeh were targeted, with several killed while using pagers in their hospitals.
Human Rights Watch has condemned the use of such tactics, noting that they violate international humanitarian law, which prohibits the use of booby traps that indiscriminately target civilians.
The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated. This type of attack has redefined the boundaries of terrorism, making any personal device a potential weapon. Senior political analysts have described the attacks as “an act of mass terror”.
Israel continues to act with impunity, both in the Palestinian territories it illegally occupies and on foreign sovereign soil.
As the UN resolution has now made crystal clear, we must sanction Israel. A full arms embargo and a two-way trade embargo must be enforced until Israel ceases its illegal occupation, blockade and other human rights violations; this will also add pressure for a ceasefire. Recognising the State of Palestine and supporting the prosecution of war crimes is essential.
