You should be made aware that Israel has bombed schools in Gaza 95 times in just two months. Documented by the UN, these attacks took place between 6 October and 15 December; with 61 of these attacks in northern Gaza. With over 80% of homes in Gaza destroyed or damaged, these schools have become shelters for tens of thousands of displaced families. Israel’s bombing of these shelters has resulted in unimaginable tragedy, wiping out entire families and erasing generations in a single strike.
In November, the UN confirmed almost 70% of all deaths in Gaza are women and children – demonstrating the attacks as being deliberate targeting of civilians or deliberately indiscriminate.
This relentless targeting of schools is illegal under international law constitutes a war crime, and must be addressed.
On December 14 and 15, Israel bombed four schools, including Khalil Owaidah School, where tens of people were killed, including 10 to 15 victims incinerated, and Ahmad Bin Abdul Aziz School, where more than 12 children under 12 were killed. Doctors at the nearby Nasser Hospital described treating a three-year-old girl whose skull was torn open by shrapnel and was operated on without adequate anaesthesia due to Israel’s supplies blockade. Another doctor described a young boy facing either death or leg amputation due to injuries sustained in Israel’s bombing.
While we all hope for a ceasefire, the reality is that it is not enough. We must suspend all relations with Israel. An arms embargo, a two-way trade embargo, and an end to all diplomatic relations with the state on trial for genocide and whose leaders are wanted war criminals at the ICC is the bare minimum. Sanctions have proven effective in halting egregious human rights abuses in other contexts; they must be applied here.
This is not a radical position, it is enforcing basic human rights and upholding international law.
