‘Stop the genocide, back South Africa’s at ICJ’
Dear XXXXXXX,
I hope this letter finds you well. I strongly urge you to back the call made by Zarah Sultana, Member of Parliament for Coventry South, urging Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to support South Africa’s application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning Israel’s actions in Gaza.
As detailed in South Africa’s comprehensive 84-page application, Israel’s military actions in Gaza have resulted in the loss of approximately 22,000 Palestinian lives, including over 7,500 children, with thousands more missing and presumed dead. The destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, and vital infrastructure has left the region in dire conditions, exacerbated by a total siege that has brought Gaza to the brink of famine.
The application also highlights statements by Israeli officials expressing genocidal intent, emphasising the gravity of the situation. In December, a UN panel concluded that genocide is already taking place in Gaza. It is crucial that the international community, including the United Kingdom, takes a stand against such atrocities.
As Zarah correctly states in her letter to the PM, “History will condemn political leaders who refused to demand an immediate ceasefire and an end to this genocide.”
I implore you to publicly call on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to support South Africa’s initiative at the ICJ and to demand an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Additionally, I urge you to advocate for sanctions on Israel for its repeated violations of international law, including an arms embargo, and to call for an end to the illegal occupation of Palestinian territory.
Committing to uphold an an ICJ ruling of genocide and enforce the court’s order is incredibly important, especially after Israel has ignored previous orders from the court for breaking international law. Sanctions must be used to ensure the rule of law is obeyed.
The British government’s historical connection to the Palestinian people and its commitment to the Genocide Convention make it imperative for our nation to play a role in addressing this crisis.I believe that your public support on this matter will contribute significantly to international efforts aimed at securing justice and lasting peace in the region.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to hearing about your stance on supporting South Africa’s ICJ application and your efforts to address the critical situation in Gaza.
Yours constituent,
