Gaza is the Deadliest “Conflict” for Journalists Ever Recorded / Israel Kills 13 Journalists a Month in Gaza / Israel’s Targeting and Murder of Journalists is Press Censorship

Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to you with deep alarm and urgency. On April 7th, 2025, Israel directly targeted a tent sheltering journalists near Nasser Hospital in Gaza. The attack killed journalists Helmi al-Faqawi and Yusuf Al-Khazandar, and injured seven others—two of whom are in critical condition.

This is not an isolated incident. Since October 2023, at least 232 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza. A recent Brown University paper notes the daily average of journalist deaths in Gaza exceeds that of all previously recorded wars combined, including the Iraq War and even the American Civil War.

This is the deadliest “conflict” for journalists ever recorded. And yet, there remains no accountability for these war crimes.

Israel has also bombed and destroyed 90 press offices in Gaza and restricted reporting by international media.

“The killing of journalists is the most extreme form of press censorship and is compounded by rampant impunity.” Nick Turse, of Brown University writes. 90% of murders of journalists worldwide go unpunished, empowering their continued targeting and execution to suppress the truth.

The deliberate targeting of journalists is a war crime. It is not only an attack on individual lives, but an attack on the public’s right to know. Israel is not just killing people—it is killing truth.

Sanctions against other states have proven effective in halting egregious human rights abuses; they must be applied here. A two-way trade and arms embargo and an end to diplomatic relations with the apartheid state is essential.

We must recognise a Palestinian state immediately to commit to a lasting peace and an end to the illegal occupation. This is a call for basic human rights for all to be protected.
