Dear [Elected Official’s Name],
I am reaching out to demand immediate intervention and a firm stance against Israel’s attacks on schools in Gaza. In just one year, nearly 85% of schools in Gaza have been bombed (The Intercept, Oct 2024). These institutions serve not only as shelters but also as critical distribution points for aid. Attacking them cripples efforts to deliver essential food, water, and medical supplies to Gaza’s desperate population under Israel’s year-long onslaught.
On Nov 7th, Israel bombed a school in Shati refugee camp, a location overcrowded with families forcibly evacuated from northern Gaza. Once they arrived seeking refuge, they were bombed. Initial reports confirm 12 people have been killed, with countless lost under the rubble.
When Israel targets schools, it does so knowing they are sheltering civilians—mostly children and mothers. This tragic reality repeats across Gaza, with schools doubling as refugee shelters amid the destruction of homes, medical facilities, and other civilian infrastructure.
Schools can be rebuilt, but lives lost cannot be replaced. Those injured may face lifelong disabilities, such as the loss of limbs, eyesight, hearing, or damage to vital organs. The long-term effects of these devastating attacks on schools will impact generations.
Every school in Gaza is a lifeline to families. Every School in Gaza is a target for Israel.
Israel must also be sanctioned for its crimes. A full arms embargo and a two-way trade embargo must be enforced until Israel ceases its illegal occupation, blockade and human rights violations in the region; this will also add pressure for a ceasefire. Recognising the State of Palestine and supporting the prosecution of war crimes is essential.
I look forward to your commitment to upholding international law through these actions.
