I am writing to express my horror as Gaza now has the highest number of child amputees per capita globally, with many undergoing surgeries without anaesthesia due to the complete collapse of the healthcare system from Israeli bombings and humanitarian blockade.

The manufactured humanitarian catastrophe is staggering:

• Over 17,000 children have been violently killed, with over 20,000 more missing, presumed buried under rubble or in unmarked mass graves
• 10 children lose one or both legs every day, a figure that will haunt us if we continue to stand by
• 80% of Gaza’s schools are destroyed, leaving every child out of school and deeply traumatised
• Gaza’s population is being starved out in Israel’s blockade, severely limiting food access and completely cutting off aid to the north of Gaza – where last month the risk of “imminent famine” was highlighted

These atrocities demand immediate action. Words of condemnation are not enough and never have been. I urge you to take decisive measures to enforce accountability and end these violent human rights abuses.

Specifically, I call on you to sanction Israel to enforce a ceasefire and hold its leadership accountable for violating international law. Sanctions have proven effective in halting egregious human rights abuses in other contexts; they must be applied here. This includes a ban on weapons and military equipment sales and licenses and a two-way trade embargo. We must also officially recognise the state of Palestine to ensure their rights are recognised.
