Dear [Elected Official’s Name],
I am writing to urgently request your intervention in response to the recent devastating attack on a school in Gaza. On Saturday, 6 July, Israeli forces bombed a UNRWA school in Nuseirat refugee camp, which housed thousands of forcibly displaced Palestinians. This bombing killed at least 16 people and wounded more than 75. Israel has claimed responsibility for this attack, and reports from the ground indicate that the majority of the wounded were children. The number of fatalities is expected to rise as many of the injured are in critical condition.
Since 7 October 2023, Israeli military operations have bombed 88% of the schools in Gaza, which have also become temporary homes for thousands of displaced Palestinians. These targeted attacks therefore not only result in a high civilian death toll but also the destruction of vital infrastructure needed for basic human life to resume when the bombardment stops, robbing children of their right to education and a safe learning environment.
One woman at the school targeted in Nuseirat refugee camp was seen collecting the flesh and bone of children in the courtyard, a sight we have sadly seen again and again in Gaza over the past 9 months. In the harrowing video, you can hear her crying out: “Flesh everywhere! There were children and women, all of them martyred! No one knows where their children are!”
The targeting of schools and other civilian infrastructure severely limits access to essential services. These actions aim to eradicate life in Gaza by targeting its most vulnerable population—its children—and ensuring that no future generations can survive and flourish.
Immediate action is required to protect civilian lives and ensure that essential facilities remain operational. Sanctions must be enforced against Israel to compel a ceasefire and stop the targeted destruction of educational and medical infrastructure. The international community has a moral obligation to act decisively to prevent further atrocities and ensure that Palestinian children can receive the education and protection they desperately need.
I urge you to take immediate and decisive action to protect the lives and future of Gaza’s children.
Your constituent,
