Dear [Elected Official’s Name],
I am writing to you with a grave concern regarding Israel’s continued targeting of schools in Gaza. The recent bombings of 2 schools in Gaza City, which killed over 30 and injured dozens more highlights the need for your action. 80% of those killed and injured in these strikes were children.
Israel has bombed 152 schools in 10 months. These near-daily occurrences of school bombings have deprived 625,000 students of an entire academic year. Over 9,200 students, mostly children, have been killed and almost 400 teachers.
Israel’s actions continue to demonstrate a deliberate strategy to exterminate the Palestinian population in Gaza, as also concluded by the United Nations. The recent targeting of these two schools, where thousands of forcibly displaced families were seeking shelter, further displays the disregard for Palestinian lives by Israel. The former Human Rights Watch executive director has stated that the killing of so many civilians in these attacks constitutes a war crime.
Our nation and government have a legal and moral responsibility to uphold human rights and international law. In addition to sanctions that see an arms embargo and two-way trade embargo, we must support the prosecution of all perpetrators of war crimes and formally recognise the state of Palestine to commit to the inalienable rights of Palestinians. This includes an end to the illegal occupation and the right of return to the millions of Palestinians forcibly displaced around the world.
As of July 12th, over 42,00 Palestinian civilians have been killed, according to EuroMed Human Rights Monitor. These deaths were completely preventable, had sanctions been implemented against Israel for its documented human rights abuses spanning decades. Protect the victims of tomorrow’s Israeli bombings of refugee camps, schools, hospitals and playgrounds by enforcing sanctions today.
