Dear [Elected Official’s Name],
Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has declared that 40,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced from refugee camps in the northern occupied West Bank and will not be allowed to return. This is a blatant act of ethnic cleansing.
As part of its large-scale displacement operation, Israeli forces have invaded and emptied the Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams refugee camps, with Katz openly stating: “We will not return to the reality that was in the past. We will continue to clear refugee camps.”
This is a clear admission of Israel’s intent to permanently expel Palestinians from their homes—a war crime under international law.
A full arms embargo will ensure weapons manufactured in our country will not contribute to further bloodshed, settlement expansion and ethnic cleansing, or upholding Israel’s system of apartheid (as concluded by the ICJ).
Sanctions against other states have proven effective in halting egregious human rights abuses; they must be applied here. A two-way trade embargo, and an end to all diplomatic relations with the state on trial for genocide and whose leaders are wanted war criminals at the ICC is the bare minimum.
We must recognise a Palestinian state immediately to commit to a lasting peace and an end to the illegal occupation.
Israel is carrying out large-scale ethnic cleansing in broad daylight—the time for empty statements is over. Will you act now to stop these crimes, or will history remember inaction as complicity?
