I am writing to bring to your urgent attention a harrowing report released by Defense for Children International Palestine (DCIP) which exposes the systematic detainment, abuse, and torture of Palestinian children by Israeli forces, and the use of children as human shields —a gross violation of human rights and international law.
DCIP has documented widespread torture and abuse since October 7, with thousands of Palestinians, including children, detained without charge. Testimonies from these children reveal a policy of dehumanisation and violence that is both intentional and systemic. 12-year-old Karim was stripped, bound, and forced to walk in front of Israeli bulldozers and tanks to serve as a human shield. Since 2000, at least 31 cases of children being used as human shields by Israeli forces have been recorded.
The report also includes the horrific accounts of children like 14-year-old Shadi and 16-year-old Mohammad, who were subjected to brutal physical violence, humiliation, and psychological terror. “They treated us like animals, not humans. When they entered our house, the soldiers were shouting and firing bullets everywhere. They took me from the house and ordered me to undress, then they tied me up and blindfolded me”. These acts are not isolated incidents; they are part of a broader policy aimed at terrorising the Palestinian population, particularly its youngest and most vulnerable members.
These actions are clear violations of international law, including the use of children as human shields, torture, and detention without charge. The intentional separation of Palestinian children from their families and the deprivation of their basic human rights have led to severe mental and physical health problems among children in Gaza.
In light of these grave violations, you must hold those responsible accountable and immediately implement sanctions against Israel. An arms embargo and a two-way trade embargo must be enforced until Israel ceases its illegal occupation and human rights violations; this will also enforce pressure for a ceasefire. Recognising the State of Palestine and supporting the prosecution of all perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity is essential. Finally, the immediate release of all Palestinian children and adults detained without charge must be secured, ensuring their safe return to their families.
