Dear [Elected Official’s Name],

I am writing to call your attention to Israel’s increasing violence in the West Bank, where airstrikes, ground assaults, and mass demolitions have devastated the Jenin refugee camp, hospitals and surrounding areas since January 21st – killing more than 12 Palestinians and injuring 50 more. This clear intent to expand the illegal settlements jeopardises the safety and human rights of Palestinians in the occupied territory and peace across the wider region.

Over 2,000 families have been displaced, whilst Israeli bulldozers have cut off key access roads to hospitals, isolating evacuees. All main entrances to Jenin are currently blocked by Israeli military forces. Two hospitals have been besieged by Israel, with medical teams attempting to provide care under direct fire, and ambulances are restricted from reaching critical areas.

UN Human Rights Office spokesperson, Al-Kheetan, has described Israel’s methods using “means developed for war fighting, in violation of human rights law” including airstrikes and the shooting of unarmed residents attempting to flee or find safety.

In July 2024, the ICC stated that member states “are under an obligation” not to recognise Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territory as legal. “They are also under an obligation not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by Israel’s illegal presence in the occupied Palestinian territory.” The ICJ also concluded that “Israel’s legislation and measures violate the international prohibition on racial segregation and apartheid.”

As Israel’s actions in the illegally occupied West Bank clearly violate international law, we must suspend all relations with Israel. A full arms embargo will ensure weapons manufactured in our country are not used for these war crimes or upholding apartheid.

Sanctions against other states have proven effective in halting egregious human rights abuses; they must be applied here. A two-way trade embargo, and an end to all diplomatic relations with the state on trial for genocide and whose leaders are wanted war criminals at the ICC is the bare minimum.

The occupation must end. Apartheid must end. This is a call for international law to be upheld and basic human rights for all to be protected.
