I am writing to draw your attention to Israel’s most recent attacks on the Kamal Adwan Hospital, where bombings have killed 50 people, including five healthcare workers. This hospital was one of the last remaining medical facilities in northern Gaza, amidst relentless Israeli bombings and an escalating humanitarian crisis.
On December 27, following Israel’s bombing of the hospital compound, Israeli forces stormed the hospital and forcibly removed 350 people, including patients and medical staff. Contact with the hospital has been lost. Ambulances sent to the site have not returned, leaving the fate of those inside unknown.
Kamal Adwan Hospital has repeatedly been subjected to Israeli attacks, including bombings, raids, and prevention of care. In Dec 2023, occupation forces bulldozed tents outside the hospital, killing and injuring displaced refugees – crushing and burying them alive.
In recent months Israeli tanks have fired directly on the hospital, bombed the northern and western sides in airstrikes killing 30 people- followed by direct gunfire, raided the premises, forcibly detained staff and trapped patients, targeted vital operational infrastructure, set parts of the building on fire, destroyed ambulances and essential medical supplies, and assassinated the head of intensive care.
The attacks on Kamal Adwan are not an anomaly. Every hospital in Gaza has been targeted by Israel over the past year.
This latest atrocity underscores Israel’s ongoing ethnic cleansing of Gaza. The international community’s failure to hold Israel accountable has emboldened it to continue committing these horrific acts. You must sanction Israel to enforce a ceasefire and hold its leadership accountable for violating international law.
Sanctions have proven effective in halting egregious human rights abuses in other contexts; they must be applied here. This includes a ban on weapons and military equipment sales and licenses and a two-way trade embargo. We must also officially recognise the state of Palestine to affirm their right to self-determination.
