Palestinian Detainees Tortured in Israeli Detention / Released Palestinian Captives Detail Torture and Abuse / Palestinian Hostages “beaten” and given “electric shocks” in Israeli Detention / 12-year-old children abused in Israeli Detention
Dear [Elected Official’s Name],
I am writing to urge you to take immediate action regarding the systematic abuse of Palestinian hostages held by Israel, as confirmed by multiple human rights organisations.
The release of Palestinian detainees under the ceasefire exchange has exposed the appalling conditions they have been subjected to, including starvation, brutal torture, and medical neglect. Many have been transferred directly to hospitals due to the abuse they endured.
Survivors have detailed enduring relentless beatings, electric shocks, and sleep deprivation – corroborating the 2024 UN report, which also highlighted the use of rape on detainees. Many were denied food, water, and medical treatment. Some lost limbs due to untreated injuries, and others were left physically incapable of standing. Multiple detainees report being beaten until the very last second before they were handed over.
A 17-year-old former detainee, Thaer, stated “I was beaten brutally, and during the interrogation, electric shocks were used in different areas of my body.”
At least 60 named Palestinians have died in Israeli custody since October 2023, with the real toll likely much higher. Hundreds remain unaccounted for, leaving families in agonising uncertainty.
Palestinian children as young as 12 have been subjected to these atrocities, with many held indefinitely without charge or trial. Those who have been convicted were subjected to apartheid military law, including children.
This systematic torture and racist two-tier criminal law enforcement violates fundamental human rights and international law. You must take action.
We cannot associate with or arm Israel. Sanctions against other states have proven effective in halting egregious human rights abuses; they must be applied here. A two-way trade and arms embargo, and an end to diplomatic relations with the apartheid state is essential.
We must recognise a Palestinian state immediately to commit to a lasting peace and an end to the illegal occupation. This is a call for international law to be upheld and basic human rights for all to be protected.
