As we head into the seventh week of Israel’s latest starvation and aid blockade on Gaza, the enclave inches towards Famine. This deliberate campaign of collective punishment is designed to kill as many civilians as possible.

For 18 months, Israel has repeatedly blockaded Gaza, denying the entry of essentials to sustain life. They have also systematically targeted aid workers, bombed community kitchens, targeted water infrastructure and produce warehouses, razed farmland, and killed farmers in northern Gaza—deliberately crippling the population’s ability to feed itself.

Dr. Ahmed al-Farra, head of the paediatrics at Nasser Hospital, has said that Gaza has now reached Stage 5 Famine. Extreme shortages of food and clean water have led to rapid weight loss and growing health crises. All residents of Gaza are suffering from anaemia, and severe pneumonia cases are spreading rapidly across the coastal enclave.

In Gaza’s collapsing hospitals, supplies are dwindling. Patients are undergoing complex surgeries—including amputations—without anaesthetic.

Meanwhile, Israel is expanding its military occupation—controlling 50% of the strip—and forcing a shrinking civilian population into increasingly crowded zones under constant bombardment.

Israel is creating a man-made famine, engineered deliberately as a weapon of war. It is a tool of genocide. These grave crimes against humanity cannot simply be condemned, we must take action to stop them and hold those responsible accountable. A two-way trade and arms embargo and an end to diplomatic relations with the apartheid state is essential.

We must recognise a Palestinian state immediately to commit to a lasting peace and an end to the illegal occupation. This is a call for basic human rights for all to be protected.
