Over the last two years, Israel has killed at least 21,000 children in Gaza, and at least 70 during the so-called ‘ceasefire’. Tens of thousands of children have been left with permanent long-term disabilities. As a result of the genocide, it is estimated that at least 45,000 children in Gaza are now orphans, pushing tens of thousands into work — some as young as eight years old — just for their families to survive.
Tens of thousands of children in Gaza now have no opportunity to return to education, not only due to Israel’s systematic targeting of universities, schools, and kindergartens in Gaza, but also because if they do not work, their surviving family members will not be able to earn enough money to eat.
Tess Ingram from UNICEF has stated that the organisation is “seeing more children scavenging through waste, looking for pieces of scrap or firewood to sell, children selling coffee.”
According to UNICEF, all children in Gaza have been denied education, as schools have been either completely or partially destroyed by Israel or converted into shelters for the displaced.
Now, more than 660,000 children are out of formal education, and an estimated 132,000 children are at risk of acute malnutrition, as basic necessities such as clean water, healthcare equipment, and proper nutrition have been partially or fully blocked from entering Gaza by Israel.
Jana, a displaced child in Gaza, devastatingly described, “We’re sick of this life—we don’t want to live this life anymore. We don’t know how to live. We are alive and dead at the same time.”
